I Am A Champion Athlete

Shawn Johnson: American Wondergirl

Her performance was one of the most memorable of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. With a buoyant spirit and knack for virtual perfection across disciplines, America fell in love with Shawn Johnson. She has now earned something that no other American female gymnast ever has: the Sullivan Award. The award honors the country’s top amateur athlete. Johnson earned the award over teammate Nastia Liukin, U.S. Olympic men’s 400-meter freestyle relay swim team, volleyball player Cynthia Barboza of Stanford, and North Carolina basketball player Tyler Hansbrough. Johnson is just the third gymnast to win the Sullivan after Paul Hamm and Kurt Thomas and is only the second U.S. gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal on balance beam.
Stacey Nuveman: No Dream Too Big

Softball has been cut from the 2012 Olympic ticket. The pressure is on this two-time Olympic champion to lead the team to another golden performance.

Welcome to the Largest Women's Team in the World

Dear Fellow Athletes:

Equal Play. As female athletes we have been striving for years to be part of a world where those words are a reality and the Women’s Sports Foundation has been there to lead the movement. Founded in 1974 by Billie Jean King, the Foundation is recognized worldwide for its leadership, vision, strength, expertise and influence. And most importantly, they are here to give us a voice as women athletes.

For more than 30 years, the Women’s Sports Foundation has been right there beside us every step of the way to:

  • work with the media to increase positive coverage of women athlete’s and women’s sports;
  • help shape the public’s attitude about women athletes and sports for women;
  • advise us on women’s sports issues and other concerns we may have had whenever we have called upon them;
  • advocate for athletes’ commercial rights and purse and salary equity;
  • market and promote female athletes to corporate partners and the public; and
  • operate a Speaker Service to enhance athlete income.

Women’s sports are where they are today because of athletes like us who have been part of the Women’s Sports Foundation’s efforts to champion opportunities for and the rights of female athletes. To find out more about how you can get involved, visit the HOW TO GET INVOLVED page or just reach out to Stacy Holand, the Athlete Marketing Manager, at 516.542.4700, ext. 154, or at SHoland@WomensSportsFoundation.org. Continue the tradition!

Sincerely,
