Women’s Sports Foundation Responds to Report on Title IX at HBCUs

Dr. Marj Snyder, Co-CEO of Women’s Sports Foundation, in response to recently released report regarding Title IX at HBCUs:

“The Women’s Sports Foundation firmly believes that Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ female students, who are predominantly African-American, deserve the same protections under Title IX as women at other colleges and universities. Beginning at a very early age, female African-Americans have far fewer opportunities to play and pay the price in adulthood as evidenced by their disproportionate rates of obesity and diabetes. HBCUs’ strong traditional ties to football and majority of female students do create a unique set of circumstances for compliance under prong 1 of Title IX. It should be noted that any school with large female populations and football will face challenges under prong 1 – which is often overemphasized in discussions of compliance. The beauty of Title IX is that there’s more than one way to comply and if these schools concentrate on making progress—prong 2 of Title IX—or meeting the interest and abilities of their female student bodies—prong 3—compliance with this indispensable law is realistic and achievable.”
