Shauna Rohbock is a woman of many faces. Not only does this 2006 Olympian excel at several sports, but she also represents the United States in multiple ways. Rohbock and her partner Valerie Fleming took home the silver medal at their first Olympic appearance. As members of the U.S. National Bobsled Team, Rohbock and Fleming finished third overall in the 2005-2006 World Cup standings, including a silver medal won at Calgary and a bronze medal at Lake Placid. Rohbock also won three medals during the 2004-2005 season and set a track record on the Olympic track in Cesana Pariol. Rohbock initially started as a braker, but decided to switch to driving, where she felt she would have more control over her own destiny and would be able to ensure a spot at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. However, she did not realize that she would be expected to serve the United States in another capacity: Rohbock had joined the U.S. National Guard in 2000, and was called to serve in Iraq in 2003, which forced her to miss the World Cup event in Lake Placid. However, she was never deployed, due to an old soccer injury that never fully healed. Her unit, the 115th Engineer Group, which did go to Iraq, feels that not only is Rohbock representing the United States in the Olympic Games, but she is also honoring them. A Provo, Utah, native and graduate of Brigham Young University (BYU), Rohbock was a member of the women's soccer team all four years, where she was named a two-time All-American and led the nation in scoring during her sophomore year. She was also named a two-time All-American heptathlete at BYU. In addition, she played for the San Diego Spirit in the now defunct Women's United Soccer Association, and soccer will always be her first love. But for a second-choice sport, an Olympic medal is not something to complain about. Most recently, Rohbock and Valerie Fleming won bronze at the 2007 World Championships. (2/07)
