History
This fund was created by an endowed gift by Donna Lopiano, the Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation and friend of Jan's, in memory of Janet T. Swanson for her support of women and girls' health issues and success in life through sport. A significant part of Jan's philanthropy and the things that gave her the most joy were making special things happen when other funding sources were unavailable and good work needed to be done. Swanson was an avid supporter of the Foundation since 1995 and, over a five-year period, created opportunities for advancement of the organization's mission with unrestricted gifts whenever asked. Honoring her joy in giving and her willingness to be spontaneous, this fund establishes a perpetual tribute and legacy.
PurposeThe Women's Sports Foundation has opportunities for advancing its mission that occur unexpectedly each year and for which funds are not available. Some examples include placement or other distribution of donated print, audio and video public service announcements, providing for press conferences to announce the results of significant public service research projects, producing print publications in greater quantities than provided for in sponsored projects, funding Web site programming to take advantage of new technologies, etc.
The Foundation often loses these opportunities unless there is a visionary donor who provides funding in a timely fashion with an unrestricted gift. As a tribute to this kind of creative philanthropy, which was demonstrated by Janet T. Swanson (1935-2000) throughout her life, a fund has been established in her honor to perpetuate this type of giving. The fund is used at the discretion of the Foundation's Executive Committee as recommended by senior staff to accomplish extraordinary purposes that further the mission of the Women's Sports Foundation by helping make special things happen for the Foundation and those it serves.
