2009 YAS-a-thon

YAS rider and Kathy SmithOn Sunday, March 29, in Southern California, the Women’s Sports Foundation teamed up with YAS Fitness Centers for the third annual YAS-a-thon. The event, which consisted of a marathon of spinning, or indoor cycling, lasted from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. In order to compete in the spin-a-thon, each participant had to raise a minimum of $1,000. With three participating YAS centers in Venice, Silverlake and East Costa Mesa, Calif., along with help from generous donors, the Foundation raised more than $40,000 in three short hours! Top fundraisers won prizes for their efforts from their respective YAS Fitness Center locations, while all participating spinners bid on several silent auction items that raised even more money for the Women’s Sports Foundation. These funds will help to carry on the mission of advancing the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.

Laila Ali and Jessica Mendoza

To cheer on riders and raise awareness of the event, Foundation President Jessica Mendoza, world champion boxer Laila Ali and BMX freestyle rider Cory Coffey cycled with spinners in Venice, while health and fitness expert Kathy Smith rode alongside those participating at the Silverlake location. Motocross star Tania Satchwell, spinning at the Costa Mesa location, became the first athlete to complete the entire three hour spin-a-thon. A special thanks to these champion athletes for sharing their time and to the YAS Fitness Centers for helping the Foundation reach its goal.
